When you become pregnant,
your body goes through an amazing
9-month transformation.
The more you understand about the changes
your body is going through, such as your addi-
tional prenatal nutritional needs and the
growth of your baby, the better experience
you are likely to have during your pregnancy.
The relationship you have with your healthcare
provider is very important to your baby’s development and your well-being. It’s important for your healthcare provider to be well informed about how you are feeling and any problems
you might notice.

The importance and function of EFAs
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) play an important role during pregnancy when fetal cells,
tissues, and organ systems are developing at a remarkably rapid rate. An adequate supply
of essential fatty acids during pregnancy is considered vital for neurological and cognitive development.
Women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant are highly en-
couraged to increase their essential fatty acids intake to meet not only the nutritional
needs of their developing baby, but their own nutritional requirements as well. (52, 53)

Essential fatty acids, like those found in PrimaCare®, are vital to the function of our
immune, nervous, and cardiovascular systems as well as the regulation of pain and
inflammation. (17) Because the human body cannot make essential fatty acids, we are
dependent on dietary or supplemental sources to meet these “essential” nutritional
requirements.

There are two important types of EFAs to consider: the omega-3s and the omega-6s. Both are
polyunsaturated fats and both are considered to be beneficial when taken in balanced
proportion. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans consume too much of the omega-6s
found in fatty meats, dairy products and vegetable oils, and an insufficient amount of omega-3s
found in cold-water fish like salmon, tuna and sardines, soy, flaxseed, and grass-fed buffalo.(52)
Increasing evidence points to this imbalance as an important health risk factor, particularly for
women. (54)

PrimaCare® and PrimaCare® ONE provides the highest level of EFAs and are the leading prescription prenatal vitamins that contain DHA and EPA plus precursors. (1-4)
