Your entire body works to support your
baby’s health for the nine months you
are pregnant.

During this time, your stores of vital essential fatty acids (EFAs) are depleted. Even after delivery, it can take up to six months or longer for EFA levels to normalize. (21) Women who breastfeed and those whose pregnancies are closely spaced are at an even greater risk of essential fatty acids depletion. (47) Proactively addressing the nutritional demands of pregnancy and lactation by increasing consumption of pharmaceutical grade EFAs, such as those found in PrimaCare® prenatal vitamins, help to minimize the risk of deficiency for both mother and child.

EFAs may help reduce postpartum depression
EFAs may help reduce postpartum depression

Studies show that women who have low levels of essential fatty acids are more likely to suffer from postpartum depression than other women. (21-24) Good nutrition can help. Eating more fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like tuna, salmon, and mackerel can help you restore your body’s EFAs. However, that can be hard to do everyday. That’s one more reason why PrimaCare® prenatal vitamins contain EFAs (containing DHA and EPA), to help keep your body in balance, and to keep you feeling good.

While essential fatty acids can help keep your body in balance, many factors can have an
impact on feelings of depression. You should contact your healthcare provider if you have
any concerns about your mood or feelings.
Benefits of breastfeeding

Breast milk provides your baby with one of the richest dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids found in the human diet. (52) Essential fatty acid supplementation in the latter part of pregnancy has been shown to improve the nutritional quality of your breast milk. Continued supplementation throughout lactation helps ensure adequate supply of EFAs in infancy, when brain development is most critical. (17, 46, 47, 54)

PrimaCare® contains the highest amount and the most complete range of
fatty acids among prenatal vitamins. (1-4)

Omega-3s from fish oil sources have been studied extensively in pregnancy
and newborns. (11-13, 22, 48)
Algae-based fatty acids, also known as “all
natural vegetarian” or “plant source”, do not contain EPA, which is needed for patients
to receive the full benefits of the DHA/EPA combination. Post-natal benefits from
fish oil-based essential fatty acids include:

Help enrich the nutritional quality of maternal milk for breast feeding (54)
Help replenish EFAs depleted during pregnancy (21)
Higher levels of EFAs have been associated with reduced risk of post-partum depression (21-24)
Help maintain vitality of hair, skin and nails (65)
